From the Beginning til 50 Years Later

Therefore let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father.  1 John 2:24

My name is Bernabe Luna Escobar.  I am the pastor of the Christ Community Church in Santa CruzBolivia, where I and my family serve the Lord with the help of all of our brothers, sisters and friends in North America.

I wish to tell a little of my life of 50 years ago when I met pastor Jack & his wife, Winona Terry.

I was 8 years old & my brother Agustin was 12. Pastor Jack & his wife were young people when they arrived in my town, Coroico. It is located in a beautiful, mountanous region in the northern part of our country called, The Yungas.

Pr Jack & Winona came to work as missionaries in the Coroico church.  My parents, Luis and Ignacia Luna, lived 20 kilometers distance from the town and my brother and I lived with the Terrys because we were students in the school there.

On weekends our parents came to the church walking for about 5 hours. Their feet would be bruised and broken by the rocks on the trail and at times would be bleeding and Pr Jack & Winona were always ready to wash and put medications on their feet. They were a blessing like angels to us. This was unforgettable.

I remember also those days when we would go out into the countryside very early in the morning where we would encounter many animals such as monkeys, parrots and other animals.

A lot of people came to the church, children, young people and adults. Pastor Jack was very dynamic, joyful and full of the love of God as was his wife, Winona. She prepared many "rich foods" for us to eat. And we were very happy living at the school with them.

In the church my father served as a Deacon and Pr Jack always used to say he was 'His Hero' because of his faith.  My mother enjoyed praying very much.

When the Terrys, taught us the Word of God, they taught us also to sing & also a lot of games and sports. One day we were very surprised by the news that Pastor Jack and his family were returning to the United States because of the health of a daughter, (Marcia.) This caused us a lot of sadness and pain.  We had become accustomed to them and we loved them very much, even like they were our own parents. They taught us to love and "to fear" the Lord.

So, our Pastors were returning to the United States and we knew our faith would be tested in their absence. But thanks to God, who was so faithful and good to us. He sustained and helped us to remain firm in every situation, even in tradgedy.

A short time after Pr Jack & Winona left, our parents died in a very tragic accident. They were traveling on top of a truck loaded with coffee that overturned on top of our parents & both of them died that day. And because of this, we were left as orphans in the care & love of God.

After all of this, the Lord opened a door to come to Santa Cruz to finish our secondary studies.  After school, I entered the Seminary to study theology where I graduated with the help of the Lord.

Today I am blessed by the Lord with a marvelous wife who serves the Lord and He has given us 6 precious children who are full of the love of God. We have one beautiful grandson.   And we are very happy working for & serving the Lord in the church and the school of Christ Community.

I wish to thank all of everyone who has helped to establish and maintain this work.  We thank you for all of the cooperation and support that you have given for the work of the Lord.  Without the help of all of you, there would have been no possibility to bless so many Bolivians who are hungry and thirsty for the Lord.  May His kingdom continue to grow and be extended to the "ends of the Earth."

May God bless all of you richly & may He reward all of you one-hundred-fold for your sacrifices! This is our prayer.

Your servant,

Bernabe Luna Escobar             (See more on Bolivia)
